David and Goliath

One of my favorite stories in the bible is the story of David and
Goliath. For those of you who don’t know the story, Israel was at war
with the Philistines. The Philistines had this huge guy by the name of
Goliath, who all of the Israelite’s soldier’s were afraid of. Goliath
stood over 9 feet tall, bigger than an NBA basketball player, and he
wore state-of-the-art armor. He had a big mouth too, popped a lot of
garbage to the Israel army ‘cause he thought he was THE MAN. Obviously,
he was the man, because they were very much afraid of him.

Now, there was this little cat by the name of David, who had three
brothers participating in the war on the side of Israel.

One day, David’s father asked him to go to the battlefields and check on
his brothers and bring them some things that he felt they might need.

When David arrived, he heard Goliath popping mad garbage and so he
started asking, “Who’s that guy?”

He was told that all of their army was afraid of Goliath because of his
size and strength and that the Israelite army captains were offering a
reward to anyone who could kill him. But no one would go up against him.
Psychologically, he had defeated them without having to even fight. They
saw his size and he talked a big game, so they were extremely afraid.

David, in his childlike innocence said, “Man, he ain’t all that tough. I
can beat him.”

Of course, everyone thought he was crazy.

Here he is, this little kid, not even in the war, saying that he could,
not just beat, but KILL Goliath. He must be out of his mind.

But David insisted.

He said that he had once killed a bear so Goliath would be nothing.
Besides, he had God on his side and God will allowed him to defeat
Goliath the same way he allowed him to defeat the bear.

Saul, who was the captain of the army, wanted Goliath dead and would try
anything at this point. So, he gave David the best armor he could find
to protect him against Goliath. When David tried on the armor, he tried
to walk around with it on so he could get comfortable wearing it, but it
felt awkward and he didn’t have time to really get use to it. David
decided that he didn’t need the armor. It wasn’t necessary because God
was going to allow him to defeat Goliath. All he felt that was necessary
was his regular clothes and a slingshot. He picked up five rocks and
went off to kill Goliath.

David said to Goliath, "You come against me with sword and spear and
javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the
God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the LORD
will hand you over to me, and I'll strike you down and cut off your
head. Today I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the
birds of the air and the beasts of the earth, and the whole world will
know that there is a God in Israel. All those gathered here will know
that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is
the LORD's, and he will give all of you into our hands."

And with that said, he slung a rock at Goliath, which hit him in the
head and brought him down.

David, the boy, had killed Goliath, the giant—with nothing but a
slingshot and absolute faith in God.

I like this story because it shows how if we just let go of the fear the
grips us and hold us back, and absolutely believe that with God we are
able to do ANYTHING, nothing will be impossible.

Now, to be honest with you, if I was a part of the Israelite army back
then, I would have thought David was crazy too. How in the world was he,
a little boy, with no protection and no weapon other than a slingshot,
going to kill a giant with weapons and armor? Just doesn’t seem humanly
possible, right?

Well, that’s just it. The Israelite army was thinking with their human
thoughts, not their spiritual thoughts. They were allowing their “human”
thoughts to cause fear. Oh, they believed in God. But they weren’t using
their faith. They had lost focus of who was truly in charge.

Not David. Not for one minute did David lose sight of who is always in
charge. He had experience to back him up. One time he defeated a bear
with a slingshot. Now, David ain’t no fool. He knows that going up
against a bear by himself would have left him dead or at least very much
mangled. But going up against a bear, or going up against a giant, with
100% belief that God will take care of the situation, didn’t allow room
in his life for fear. If you believe with all of your heart that God
will take care of you, He always will.

When you go against the battles in your life, you must go against them
the same way David went against Goliath—with absolute faith. Not for one
second should you entertain the thought that you will be defeated. Not
for one minute will you entertain the thought that you are only one
person, impossible for you to do the impossible. With God, you are never
alone. God will fight all of your battles for you, if you only believe
He will.

ACTION POINT: If your spirit is urging you to step out and do something
that you may have never done before, and you feel fear gripping at
you—think of David. Know, without a shadow of a doubt, that God is going
to take care of it for you. Don’t worry about adding an armor of
protection. God has got your back. Thinking of starting your own
business but fear is holding you back? Remember David. Thinking of
stepping out of your present job and into a career that is more to your
satisfaction, but fear of not being able to pay your bills holding you
back? Think of David. Any situation arising in your life that has you
fearful, think of David and how he defeated Goliath with nothing but a
slingshot and some rocks and a strong belief that God has got his back.
It works the same way for you as it did for David. So, get that
slingshot ready and go slay dem giants.
